Low Milk Supply
Moms who underproduce breastmilk represent about 50% of patients at Woven Pediatrics. Not making enough milk is devastating and confusing and overwhelming. Please do not try to figure this out on the internet or on your own. Woven Pediatrics will help with your milk supply!
What is Low Milk Supply?
"Hypogalactia" is diagnosed when a mom does not make enough milk to feed her baby. Typically, less than 500mL/day. If you are needing donor milk or formula to supplement, you have low supply.
What happens at a visit?
We need to know how much milk is available, so moms feed and pump to assess their milk volumes. We talk about getting labs, making a sustainable feeding plan and possible medications.
There is medication for this?
Yes. Once we determine the cause of the "hypogalactia" there are some medications that can be used to bring the supply up. There is no magical solution, but many moms can improve their supply with meds.
What causes low milk supply?
Good question! We need to figure this out. Woven Pediatrics offers medical evaluations to determine the cause of low supply. There is always a medical reason. This is not a bad luck or poor parenting problem.
Shouldn't I Triple Feed?
Triple Feeding is an unsustainable feeding plan. Woven Pediatrics never recommends triple feeding around the clock. Triple feeding is exhausting, and there is no reason to think it will increase your supply.
Should I just wean?
Not without a medical evaluation! Dr. Stephanie is supportive of weaning if the questions have been answered. You deserve to understand what is happening in your body! Please talk to Woven before weaning.
